Liposuction Surgery

Overview

Liposuction is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure. It is also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy. It sculpts the body by removing undesirable fat from areas of the body that are unresponsive to typical weight-loss methods. This is true body sculpting. Liposuction is not intended as a weight loss technique, but rather a procedure used to change the shape and contour of the body.

Liposuction with Dr. Delia means you are receiving treatment from one of the most experienced body sculpters in the Boston South Shore area. He is a specialist performing minimal sedation liposuction, also known as stay awake liposuction. This means that during the procedure, you are conscious and able to stand, sit up, and move about, allowing Dr. Delia to sculpt your body while you are in different positions.  This leads to optimal results, since Dr. Delia (and you) are able to see target areas from all sides, not just lying down. The surgery may take 1 to 2 hours, depending on the area(s) being treated.

Dr. Delia genuinely believes in collaborating with his patients to deliver results that lead to a transformative shift in confidence. By listening to his patient, he can provide personalized results that tailor to individual desires. While the technique stays the same, Dr. Delia works to provide the best outcome for each patient, which means that no two surgeries are alike.

What does liposuction address?

Liposuction can be used to treat localized fat deposits in many of the following areas: abdomen, flanks (love handles), hips, chest, neck, thighs, bra-roll, arms, back, buttocks, calves and ankles.

What does liposuction entail?

During the operation, tiny incisions are made near the area being treated, and when possible, within the fold or natural creases in the skin. Intact fat cells are removed from the body using suction with a blunt cannula. Patients who have greater skin elasticity will achieve the smoothest results.

Liposuction can be performed in tandem with other procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lift, or Mommy Makeover. Dr. Delia will discuss the best way to achieve your desired aesthetic during your consultation.

After the procedure

There is usually minimal postoperative discomfort, but it is typically managed with oral medications and will subside after a day or two.

You can typically return to work after 2 to 3 days, but any strenuous activity should be avoided for 2 weeks. Although you may go home after your surgery, we advise that you stay with a capable adult for a 24-hour period following the surgery to monitor recovery.

After liposuction, it is important to wear your compression garment as directed by Dr. Delia. It is normal for some swelling to persist for 2-3 months after surgery.

Best candidates for liposuction

The best candidates for liposuction are those patients close to their ideal body weight with good skin tone. Heavier patients with higher BMI’s may also undergo treatment for debulking with appropriate expectations.
